This is Dawn's personal blog. The blog name Orchids in Formaldehyde hints of sweetness and darkness in her views. A paradox of perspective that is sometimes confusingly unpredictable.

5 On A Friday: Let's Get Serious With Blogging

It's probably because I was on blogging hiatus the past month that's why I now have the compulsion to get more serious with my blogs, as if I have left them to die and now I need to resuscitate them. I've decided to do more than what I normally would as a way to improve myself in this one aspect of my life.

These 5 goals are actually aimed for my beauty blog Keep Calm and Beautify and not so much with Orchids because Orchids is more of a journal to me, where I express anything I want when I want, how I want it. It's "me" without trying too hard. KCB has a targeted audience in mind, that's why I would like to present the best blog that I can deliver.

Here are the 5 goals:

  • Take better pictures.
I am actually pretty satisfied with how my HTC One V takes photos. The problem is, I need a better location. It's really too dark inside this room that my brother even turns the lights on during the day. :/ With the previous photos I took, I had to open all the curtains, turn on the lights, and climb up to my brother's bunk where it's the sunniest. That is, if it is sunny. On cloudy or rainy days, there is just no hope.

I am thinking of maybe building my own light box (hmmm) but that would mean clutter and expenses. Plus where to stash the light box afterwards is a problem. Buying one is also out of the question.

  • Improve Photoshop skills.
Also on the same grain of presenting better pictures. Not that I would heavily Photoshop my review pictures, but just adding some pizzazz and sometimes clarity to muddy pictures would be nice.

  • Schedule blog posts.
They say serious bloggers have schedules of when posts are published, so their readers can anticipate when to visit their sites. I guess it's easier getting "returning customers" when they know what time you'll be open.

This one will be difficult for me, because I experience down times and manic phases. lol. I write when I feel like writing, like now: it's 6:00 in the morning and I'm still awake. Having to schedule posts means having to write them way early (like a week before) and controlling the urge to publish right away. Hehe.

  • Diversify topics.
I always write reviews on products, tried once each for hauls, fashion, shops, and favorites. I might need to make more of those posts to have a more rounded yet cohesive range of topics. But that would mean more expenses because the above stated topics need multiple items rather than just the one item on focus common to reviews.

I'll have to come up with other topics then. Hehehe.

  • Get a domain.
O_o This one is the heavyweight. I have always wanted to have a domain, but I'm intimidated by it. I used to have a "green living" blog/website a few years ago and it has it's own domain, all set up by my brother, but I couldn't figure anything out. Thus I was pretty much reliant on him to make the changes I want instead of just doing it myself.

What I've read somewhere though, that if you buy a domain and still host it in Blogger (or buy the domain through Blogger) it will be as easy as just blogging through Blogger. :/ Still have to figure that out. And I'm wondering about the cost.

So that's the 5 somewhat ambitious goals I have for my blog this year. Hopefully, I get to accomplish most of them by midyear when my blog would turn 1. "Blogiversary" is another thing I've been seeing here and there. Not that I just want to jump with the trend, but I somehow want to feel that I've improved over the year. :D

Thanks for reading!

Dookie the Birthday Boy

Today is Dookie's 8th birthday. Such an old fart. :P But he is still so cute and adorable. And because he is mature, he seems to understand us... until guests arrive, then there'll be chaos. Lol.

I couldn't blame him though. He's a terrier and it's his innate characteristic to be feisty. His lineage is also brought up as gamers/hunters for small animals that's why he's so wild sometimes. He has caught and a few times killed various critters slinking around the property, like snakes, geckos, rats, toads, a chicken... :( The chicken was just last month while I was home and it freaked the hell out of me. On a good note, he didn't feast on the chicken (or any of the other creatures). He just catches them and kills them if they give a fight and after watching over the "treasure" (that's how it looks like) he leaves them there. It became my responsibility to bury the chicken. The snake was burned, and I don't know what became of the others.

I have brought Dookie outside the fenced property, he is amiable. Friendly actually. When I brought him to the vet, he wants to play with the other dogs there. Same with the other dogs in the neighborhood whenever he escaped the gate. I still do have to catch him though which was a nightmare because he would run away when he sees you. Old fart. But I can't just leave him be to come back when he pleases because I'm scared he would be run over by a vehicle and there were trucks passing by that road. And also probably because all our nearby neighbors are locking themselves inside their houses when they hear our beloved Dookie is roaming the streets. Hahaha. It's like he's the spawn of the devil in curly fur. :D

But he's not wild when it's really just us. It's just strangers in his territory that gets him all hyped up. I guess that's understandable because he's still a dog.

The Day That Was Figuratively Mine

It may have started weird, and it also ended weird, but the in between was fun. For starters, it was a national holiday (Chinese New Year-probably the government doesn't want to incur the wrath of the wealthy Chinese businessmen) so I could actually celebrate the day instead of waiting for the weekend for some people to actually have time for me. :D

I got two cakes. :D One from my brother and the other was from Caye. I'm guessing it's probably because I'm obsessed playing Bakery Story on my phone. That's all I ever do now. Lol.

We ate cake for lunch. Haha. We have no refrigerator here at our place so it's not like it's gonna keep, and besides... cake! Who can resist pigging out the minute one gets a hand on it?

Obviously we can't. See we already stabbed it with forks before we got the idea of taking a picture first. Really, an online life really takes the fun out of going for the kill.

This cake from Mary Grace was super yummy. Yummier than I expected since it's chocolate and I'm not a fan of chocolate. Chocolate Truffle was the name or something. The icing has a unique texture, like fudge, and although it's too sweet, it doesn't make me gag.

This is the cake Caye brought me. A dedication cake with a candle from Red Ribbons. I feel like a kid with this. Flavor is mocha, which is one of my fave flavors.

We went out later that afternoon since it's the end of the month, thus payday, thus huge sale. There was a huge sale at Home World so I decided to check out some drawers because all my things were strewn everywhere. Nightmare.

We decided to eat at Old Spaghetti House for dinner and that's me going straight for the kill again. Hehehe. It was still hot. I had lasagna while Caye had the golden chicken with spaghetti. The chicken was delicious, I took a bite from his plate. :D It had ham and cheese along with the chicken inside the crust.

So home we went towing the drawers I bought. I still had to blow my candle before the day is done. Unfortunately, the guy doesn't want to sing the birthday song even if it was just the two of us. :/

The place was really a mess, especially after I bought home the drawers, there's hardly any space left for walking. So when Caye went home, I got the urge to clean the room to make space for my new furniture. :D At 10 o'clock at the night of my birthday, I had a general cleaning. By myself. And up to elbows in dust and garbage and vermin skeleton. :/ I finished at 3am in the morning. And then I ate cake. :) It was a weird way to spend a birthday but it was an accomplishment, so I didn't feel so lousy at all. Like it's an omen that there'll be good things to come this year, I can feel it. :)

And here's the finished product. Hurray! More floor space. :)

And thus the day ended. :)
